RECOGNITION OF PRIOR TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

A.
QUALIFICATIONS
To qualify for a waiver of the mandatory training requirements established by the Michigan Sheriffs
Coordinating and Training Council under the authority of the Local Corrections Training Act – 125
of 2003, an individual must meet all of the requirements in one of the following categories:
PREVIOUSLY MICHIGAN CERTIFIED

1. An applicant must have been previously certified in Michigan in accordance with the Local

Corrections Officer Training Act – 125 of 2003.

2. The separation from employment by the officer should be under such conditions that qualify

the candidate for employment in Michigan as a local corrections officer.

3. If the applicant was previously employed as a certified corrections officer for a period of

one (1) year or less and that applicant is re-employed within 12 months of the time they

separated from employment as a local corrections officer.

4. If the applicant was previously employed as a certified corrections officer for a period of more

than one (1) year but less than five (5) years and the applicant is re-employed within 18

months of the time they separated from employment as a local corrections officer.

5. If the applicant was previously employed as a certified corrections officer for a period of more

than five (5) years and the applicant is re-employed within 24 months or the time they
separated from employment as a local corrections officer.

6. The applicant has obtained a conditional offer of employment.

7. Employment for the purposes of sections 1-5 shall mean a work year constitutes 2080 hours

in a consecutive 365 day period.
MICHIGAN PRE-SERVICE

1 Applicant must have graduated from an approved Michigan local corrections officer training

academy within 12 months of a conditional offer of employment.
CERTIFIED OUT-OF-STATE OFFICERS

1. Applicant is a certified local corrections officer in good standing in a state other than

Michigan and has acted in that capacity for a minimum of 2080 hours following the date of

certification or licensing.

2. Applicant has completed training recognized by the Council and equivalent to the Michigan

standard for certification established under the authority of the Local Corrections Officer

Training Act – 125 of 2003.

3. The applicant must meet the current selection and employment standards for Michigan local

corrections officers.

4. The applicant must complete re-entry/core training that demonstrates knowledge of the
corrections system in Michigan.

5. The applicant has obtained a conditional offer of employment.

6. Employment for purposes of sections 1-5 shall mean a work year constitutes 2080 hours in a

consecutive 365 day period.
MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS

1. Applicant is or was a certified Michigan Department of Corrections officer in good standing

and has acted in that capacity for a minimum of 2080 hours following date of certification or

licensing.

2. If the applicant was previously employed as a Michigan Department of Corrections officer for

a period of one (1) year and the applicant is re-employed within 12 months of the time they

separated from employment as a Michigan Department of Corrections officer.

3. If the applicant was previously employed as a Michigan Department of Corrections officer for

a period of one (1) year but less than five (5) years and the applicant is re-employed within 18

months of the time they separated from employment as a Michigan Department of Corrections

officer.

4. If the applicant was previously employed as a Michigan Department of Corrections officer for

a period of more than five (5) years and the applicant is re-employed within 24 months of the

time they separated from employment as a Michigan Department of Corrections officer.

5. Applicant has completed training recognized by the Council and equivalent to the Michigan

LICENSED, MICHIGAN POLICE OFFICERS

1. Applicant is or was a licensed Michigan police officer in good standing and has acted in that

capacity for a minimum of 2080 hours following date of certification or licensing.

2. Applicant has successfully completed a certified MCOLES training academy within 12 months

of a conditional offer of employment as a local corrections officer.

3. If the applicant was previously employed as a licensed Michigan Police Officer for a period of

one (1) year and the applicant is re-employed within 12 months of the time they separated

from employment as a licensed Michigan Police Officer.

4. If the applicant was previously employed as a licensed Michigan Police Officer for a period of

more than one (1) year but less than five (5) years and the applicant is re-employed within 18

months of the time they separated from employment as a licensed Michigan Police Officer.

5. If the applicant was previously employed as a licensed Michigan Police Officer for a period of

more than five (5) years and the applicant is re-employed within 24 months of the time they

separated from employment as a licensed Michigan Police Officer.

6. Applicant has completed training recognized by the Council and equivalent to the Michigan

standard for certification established under the authority of the Local Corrections Training

Act-125 of2003.

7. The applicant must meet the current selection and employment standards for Michigan Local

Corrections Officers.

8. The applicant must complete re-entry/core training that demonstrates knowledge of the

corrections system in Michigan.

9. The applicant has obtained a conditional offer of employment.
10. Employment for purposes of sections 1-5 shall mean a work year constitutes 2080 hours in

a consecutive 365 day period.
B. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
All applicants for the Recognition of Prior Training and Experience process are required to
complete and Submit the attached application to the Michigan Sheriffs Coordinating and Training
Council, 515 N. Capitol Avenue, Lansing, Michigan 48933. Documents verifying previous
employment and training may be sent by FAX (517-485-1013). All other documents and forms must
be original copies and mailed to MSCTC.
1. The application packet consists of the following:
complete this form. Questions that do not apply to the applicant shall be answered with N/A.

Make sure ALL questions are answered.

b. Verification of Training. All applicants shall provide verification of successful completion of

local corrections officer training unless employed as a local corrections officer in Michigan

prior to January 1, 2005.

c. All applicants must provide written documentation verifying their previous employment as a

certified local corrections officer. This verification must be in the form of a letter, on the

agency’s letterhead, indicating dates of employment and the capacity in which the applicant

was employed. If employed in more than one county, a letter from each agency must be

submitted. Employment verification is mandatory and applications without employment

verification will not be processed.

d. Verification of Certification. All applicants shall provide documentation verifying their status

as a certified local corrections Officer. If the applicant was employed as a local corrections

officer in Michigan prior to January 1, 2005, and their name was submitted to the Council prior

to that date, they were certified under the “grandfathering” clause in the Local Corrections

Officer Training Act - 125 of 2003.
C. MSCTC APPLICATION REVIEW AND NOTIFICATION
MSCTC staff will review all applications submitted for the recognition of Prior Training and
Experience Process. After the review is completed, MSCTC will notify the applicant in writing as to
the status of the request.
D. APPEAL OF DECISION
1. All other considerations for prior training and experience may be submitted to the Council for
individual consideration and review.
2. In the event of an adverse decision or denial, the applicant may appeal directly to the Council in
writing.
