THE MICHIGAN SHERIFFS COORDINATING and TRAINING COUNCIL

The council is created as an autonomous entity in the department of corrections. The department is not fiscally or programmatically responsible or liable for any of the responsibilities or duties of the council. The council shall consist of seven (7) members selected as follows:
(a) The president of the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association
(b) A sheriff from a county having a population over 400,000
(c) A sheriff from a county with a population between 100,000 and 400,000
(d) A sheriff from a county having a population under 100, 000
(e) Two members of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Michigan
(f ) A member of the Jail Administrators Committee of MSA.
All terms are for one year except for the president of MSA who shall serve as long as he/she holds that office.
For 2010, the members are:

Sheriff James D. Bosscher, Missaukee County
Sheriff Robert J. Pickell, Genesee County
Sheriff Daniel H. Heyns, Jackson County
Sheriff Wayne K. Kangas, Clinton County
Sgt. Mark Reminga, Kent County
Sgt. Patrick Melton, Wayne County
Mark Sabin, Jail Administrator, Montcalm County

County with population over 400,000
County between 100,000 and 400,000
County with population under 100,000

Sheriff Kangas serves as chairperson and Sheriff Heyns serves as vice- chairperson.
James Reed was appointed by the Council to serve as Executive Secretary.

THE ADVISORY BOARD

The local corrections officer advisory board is appointed by the council and shall consist of nine (9) members as follows:
(a) Three (3) members from Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Michigan
(b) Three (3) members from Michigan Sheriff’s Association
(c) One (1) member from Police Officers Association of Michigan
(d) One (1) member from Fraternal Order of Police
(e) One (1) member from Michigan Association of Counties
All members shall hold office for a term of three (3) years except for members first appointed.
