TRAINING OFFICER CERTIFICATION for
LOCAL CORRECTIONS OFFICER TRAINING ACADEMIES
Standards for Local Corrections Officer Program Trainers

1. High School Diploma or Equivalency

2. The candidate must have been employed for the equivalent of two (2) years in a position
   directly involved with the custody, care, and control of one of the following groups:

A. Incarcerated felons or misdemeanants.
B. Pretrial detainees.
C. Probationary felons or misdemeanants.
D. Paroled felons.
E. Incarcerated juvenile offenders.

Time spent as a student intern or simply employment by a corrections agency shall not
be considered relavent work experience in and of itself.

3. Written recommendation from the Sheriff or his/her designated representative.

4. Successful completion of a MSCTC approved training program for trainers. These include
   but are not limited to the 40 Hour NIC Train-the Trainer Program and the NIC 32 Hour
   Foundation Skills Program. Specialty training modules such as Defensive Tactics and Fire
   Safety may require special trainer certification.

5. Satisfactory completion of the Local Corrections Officer Training Program is preferred.

6. A request to consider other employment experience and trainer certifications in lieu of the
   above requirements may be submitted in writing to the MSCTC. Requests of this type will
   be considered on an individual basis.

NOTE:

ADDITIONAL  REQUIREMENTS for FIRE SAFETY, DEFENSIVE TACTICS, FIRST AID/CPR/AED,
CUSTODY and SECURITY, and BOOKING/INTAKE MODULES.

FIRE SAFETY
Requires satisfactory completion of an approved fire safety train-the-trainer class or equivalent
sprecialized training.

DEFENSIVE TACTICS
Requires current trainer certification issued by the vendor chosen for this module.

FIRST AID/CPR/AED
Requires current trainer certification issued by the vendor chosen for this module.

CUSTODY and SECURITY and BOOKING/INTAKE
An individual providing Council sanctioned training in the disciplines of Booking and Intake, and
Custody and Security shall have experience in said discipline within a county jail setting in order to be
qualified to teach said curriculum. Determintaion of current and practical experience is within the
sole discretion of the Council.Adopted July 9, 2009
